From Baby Bed to Big-Kid Bed: Which Transition at What Age?
Moving from a baby bed to a big-kid bed marks a new stage in a child’s life. But every child develops at their own pace: some quickly start trying to climb out of their bed, others show an increasing need for independence, while some are still perfectly happy in their baby bed. The transition should therefore always be adapted to their needs and development.
There are now several ways to support this transition: an evolving bed, a Montessori-inspired floor bed, a bed with safety rails or a house bed. The main thing is to choose a set-up that suits the stage your child is going through.
From birth to 2 years: a bed that grows with your baby
During the first few months, a baby bed naturally remains the preferred sleeping arrangement. But even at this stage, some models can help anticipate the next steps.
An evolving bed can accompany a child well beyond the first few months, gradually adapting to their changing needs.
The 9-in-1 evolving cot, for example, can go from a traditional cot configuration to a more spacious oval shape, before evolving further over the years into an XL version. A particularly practical solution for parents looking to avoid replacing furniture at every stage.
A decorating idea: keep the same base and simply update the surroundings. New bedding, a few accessories or some wall décor can often give the bedroom a whole new feel.
Around 18 months–2 years: the first signs of independence
It is often around 18 months that some children begin to show they are ready for a new type of bed: trying to climb out of their cot, wanting to get in and out independently, or simply showing a desire to “be like the grown-ups”.
At this age, a low bed can be an interesting transition.
Montessori-inspired models, positioned close to the floor, allow children to access their bed easily and gradually develop their independence. Some models also feature low safety rails to maintain a reassuring environment.
This approach is particularly suited to parents looking to adapt their child’s sleeping arrangement while keeping the bedroom soft, uncluttered and accessible.
From 2–3 years: the first real “big-kid bed”
For other children, the transition comes a little later, particularly when the baby bed starts to feel too small or the child begins asking for more space.
Moving to a big-kid bed can then be an opportunity to create a little world of their own.
The house bed naturally fits this stage. It adds a playful touch while remaining a real piece of bedroom furniture that can be personalised as tastes and interests evolve.
For children who still need reassurance, some models feature high safety rails with an opening, providing a sense of security while making it easier to get in and out of bed.
The Tokyo and Seoul beds, for example, feature a high safety rail with an opening that allows children to get in and out of bed more easily.
And afterwards? A bed that continues to grow
Once the transition has been made, the bed does not necessarily need to change at every new stage.
As children grow, their needs evolve: more space, a desire for a higher sleeping area, additional storage… The bedroom gradually changes with them.
That is why choosing a model with several configurations or possibilities for adaptation from the outset can be a practical option.
Some beds can initially be set up close to the floor, then raised as the child grows. Others can be fitted with removable safety rails or complemented with storage solutions.
The right time is your child’s time
Ultimately, there is no perfect age for moving from a baby bed to a big-kid bed.
At 18 months, some children may already be ready to sleep in a floor bed. At 2 or 3 years old, others may feel more comfortable with the familiar reassurance of a bed with safety rails. And some children may prefer to stay in their baby bed for a little longer.
The most important thing is to observe your child rather than follow a specific deadline.
To support this journey, there are now solutions for every stage: an evolving baby bed to start with, a low bed to encourage independence, a bed with safety rails for a reassuring transition, and finally a house bed to create a little world of their own.
The bedroom grows with them, too.
