Montessori Bed: Encouraging Your Child's Independence from Day One

Placed directly on the floor or very slightly raised, the Montessori bed is designed so your child can get in and out freely, at their own pace, without depending on an adult. At Mon Lit Cabane, we offer a selection of floor beds in FSC-certified solid pine, made in Europe, that fully embrace the principles of Montessori pedagogy.

What is a Montessori Bed?

The Montessori method, developed by Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, places the child at the centre of their own learning. Applied to the bedroom, this educational approach advocates an environment "child-sized": low furniture, accessible spaces, and a bed the child can leave or return to independently.

Specifically, a Montessori bed is a bed placed on the floor or at very low height without high bars or obstacles. The child perceives their bed as a chosen rest space, which promotes peaceful sleep and develops their sense of initiative.

The Great Principles of the Montessori Bedroom

Accessibility: everything must be within the child's reach: the bed, storage, toys.
Freedom of movement: no physical hindrance. The child moves according to their own will.
Order and simplicity: a streamlined environment that promotes concentration and inner security.
Natural materials: wood, cotton, linen: materials that ground the child in reality.

Why Choose a Montessori Bed for Your Child?

Supporting the Development of Independence

From the first walking lessons, the child is able to get into bed without help. This freedom, even minimal, strengthens their self-confidence and reduces anxieties related to bedtime. Parents often observe an improvement in sleep quality and less resistance at the evening ritual.

Real Safety, Designed for Everyday Life

Unlike beds with high bars, the floor bed eliminates the risk of falling from a height. Our models incorporate low safety barriers that delimit the sleep space without imprisoning the child — an essential characteristic for families who choose the Montessori approach. We nevertheless recommend placing a light rug on the floor so the child doesn't hurt themselves if they fall.

A Durable Investment in an Evolving Bed

Our Montessori beds are available in standard sizes (90×190, 90×200, 105×190) and can accompany the child from early childhood through to adolescence. Some models are used on the floor first, then raised with additional legs — an evolutivity that makes this a sensible long-term purchase.

Which Montessori Bed to Choose According to Your Child's Age and Needs?

For Toddlers (from around 18 months)

As soon as your child shows the desire to get out of bed alone, they are ready for a floor bed. Our Brasilia and Dakar models are the most popular for this transition: low structure, close slats for better mattress support, and removable safety barriers.

For a School-Age Child

The House Bed K, House Bed DK and the Seoul or Tokyo series, designed for sizes 90×190 to 105×190, are perfectly suited to a Montessori bedroom for children aged 3 to 10. Their streamlined silhouette integrates into a calming universe, without visual overload.

For a Double Montessori Bed

Some families wish to create a shared rest space — for conscious co-sleeping or large sibling groups. Our House Bed DB premium and House Bed L premium are available in 140×200 cm and can be used on the floor to remain true to the Montessori spirit.

Our Montessori Beds: Manufacturing and Materials

At Mon Lit Cabane, all our Montessori beds are made in Europe with FSC-certified solid wood. The wood is treated with non-toxic finishes, suitable for young children. Our structures are tested and certified compliant with European standards EN 747 and EN 1725.

  • FSC-certified solid wood: pine and beech from sustainably managed forests.
  • Non-toxic paints and varnishes: no VOCs, no lead, no phthalates.
  • European manufacturing: complete traceability, strict safety standards.
  • Treated wood slats: optimal support, compatible with all our mattresses.

How to Arrange a Montessori Bedroom Around Your Floor Bed?

The bed is only one element of a coherent Montessori environment. Here are some pointers to extend the spirit of the method throughout the bedroom:

  • Place a play mat or floor rug around the bed to cushion any nighttime exits.
  • Prefer low furniture: shelves, tables and chairs at child height.
  • Opt for a floor mirror in the bedroom so the child can observe themselves and develop self-awareness.
  • Choose soft, accessible lighting: a night light the child can turn on or off themselves.
  • Limit the number of visible toys for an orderly, stimulating environment.

FAQ — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

At What Age Can a Child Be Put in a Montessori Bed?

There is no strict minimum age. Many families practising Montessori pedagogy start from birth. The transition from a barred bed generally takes place between 18 months and 3 years, when the child seeks to get out of bed alone. The essential thing is that the environment is secured and adapted to their mobility.

What is the Difference Between a Montessori Bed and a Classic Floor Bed?

A floor bed can be any mattress or structure placed flush with the floor. A Montessori bed, in the strict sense, is part of a global educational philosophy: it is designed to promote the child's independence, integrated into an environment suited to them, with natural materials and a streamlined design. At Mon Lit Cabane, our Montessori beds combine these two dimensions: functional low structure and coherent educational approach.

Is a Montessori Bed Dangerous?

No, quite the opposite. A floor bed eliminates the main risk of raised barred beds: falling from a height. It is however important to secure the environment around the bed (fix furniture to the wall, avoid protruding corners nearby, and place a rug around to cushion exits). Our Montessori beds are certified compliant with European safety standards.

Which Mattress to Choose for a Montessori Bed?

For a Montessori bed, choose a firm mattress, suited to the child's age, with a height of 10 to 15 cm. A mattress too thick would lose the benefits of the low height; too thin, it wouldn't properly support the spine. At Mon Lit Cabane, we offer a range of mattresses designed specifically for our structures, available in different heights according to the child's age and weight.
